Informal Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade (IDP) holds its second regular meeting in 2023

The Second Informal Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade in 2023 was held on 25 May 2023. Co-chaired by Ambassador LI Chenggang and Moroccan Ambassador H.E. Omar ZNIBER, the meeting was attended by more than 130 delegates from WTO members, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and academia. During his opening remarks, Ambassador LI Chenggang pointed out that the IDP has made remarkable progress in many aspects through more than two years of dialogue, and now it has reached a critical point. The cosponsors will work together to achieve concrete results on MC13. Ambassador Li stressed that the IDP will keep inclusiveness as gene of IDP, continue to maintain close cooperation and interaction with the process of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and continue to support the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core.

Ambassadors of other four IDP coordinators, including Morocco, Ecuador, Barbados and Australia, and the Director of the Trade and Environment Division of the WTO Secretariat shared their views and expectations on IDP. The International Organization for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) introduced its "Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic" initiative with the Chinese Government. The Food and Agriculture Organization of UN (FAO), the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) and the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS) presented their latest progress in tackling plastic pollution. A number of representatives of WTO members and stakeholders provided comments on the draft vision and elements of IDP MC13 outcome.

In conclusion, Ambassador Li introduced the road-map of the IDP towards MC13, once again stressed that the IDP would enhance international cooperation, called on the WTO members to voluntarily share experiences and practices, encouraged cosponsors to outreach vigorously, and further discuss on how to respond to the needs of developing members, and jointly promote capacity building and technical assistance.

A small exhibition showcasing bamboo products as substitutes for plastics was organized by INBAR on the sidelines of the meeting.
