This year marks the 20th anniversary of China’s accession to the WTO. Over the past two decades, China has enjoyed rapid economic and social development with continuous improvement of its socialist market economy system and constant expansion of its market scale.
China’s development has also created great opportunities for the world. China has become the major trading partner of over 120 countries and regions. It has been the world’s second largest importer and the most important export destination for the least developed countries for 12 consecutive years. China’s import of goods soared to 2.08 trillion USD in 2019 from 243.6 billion USD in 2001, with a 12.7% average YoY growth. The past three years witnessed the annual figure surpassed 2 trillion USD. Moreover, the accumulated import of service reached 4.7 trillion USD in the same period with a 15.2% average YoY growth rate, much higher than the 7.7% global average. Over the last 20 years, with an average contribution to global economic growth at about 30 percent, China has become a major engine for global economic recovery and growth.
As an important member of the WTO, China has been participating in all aspects of WTO work, faithfully fulfilling its commitments to the WTO and boosting high-level trade and investment liberalization and facilitation.
The WTO is going through its most difficult times ever amid the rise of populism and deglobalization. China firmly supports and upholds the rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. China would like to work with all parties to strengthen cooperation, fight against unilateralism and protectionism, and promote WTO’s necessary reforms. With efforts by all members, we hope that WTO could maintain its relevance and play a bigger role in global economic governance, especially against the current background of Covid-19 pandemic and profound changes unseen in a century.
