Minister Wang Wentao Attended and Addressed the Plenary Session of MC12

On June 12, 2022, the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference was open in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Wang Wentao, Minister of Commerce, headed a delegation to attend the opening session and addressed the plenary session. Mr. Ma Youxiang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and H.E. Li Chenggang, Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of China to the WTO also attended related events.

Wang Wentao said at the plenary session that China was committed to the work of the WTO. On a number of important international occasions, H.E. President Xi Jinping called for all parties to jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. The WTO reform should promote economic globalization and make economic globalization more open, inclusive, balanced and beneficial to all through updating rules and strengthening institutional safeguard; the WTO reform needs to benefit all Members and protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing Members. China stands ready to join hands with all parties to push for outcomes in COVID-19 response and food safety, among other areas, at MC12 and help the WTO play a bigger role in world economic recovery.

Wang said that as an important contributor to international pandemic response, China had provided over 2.2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to more than 120 countries and international organizations. China supports the WTO in reaching consensus at an early date regarding the TRIPS waiver on COVID-19 vaccines and stands ready to contribute its share.

Wang underlined that the Chinese economy is still characterized by strong resilience, huge potentials and bright prospects. China is taking expeditious moves to build a new development paradigm and unswerving steps to advance high-standard opening-up, which will surely bring more opportunities for market access, growth and cooperation to the whole world. China stands ready to work with all parties to practice true multilateralism, firmly uphold the multilateral trading system, foster an open world economy, and build a community with a shared future for mankind.

MC12, the first WTO ministerial conference held in four and a half years, is co-hosted by the WTO and Kazakhstan and attended by the ministers and representatives of 164 WTO members on-site.
