Informal Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade (IDP) holds its second regular meeting in 2022

The second Informal Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade in 2022 was held on 24 May 2022. Chaired by Ecuadorian Ambassador H.E. Jose Valencia and Rhys Pogonoski on behalf of the Australian Ambassador, the meeting was attended by about 100 delegates from WTO members, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and academia. During his opening remarks, Ambassador Li Chenggang affirmed the progress of IDP since the issuance of the Ministerial Statement. He commended WTO members and stakeholders for their active participation in the dialogue and encouraged IDP coordinators to hold relevant activities during the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference. He pointed out that IDP can play a unique role in the international joint efforts to tackle plastic pollution.

DDG Jean-marie Paugam and the representatives of WCO, UNEP, BRS, IUCN and TESS updated their recent work and commented on the next step of IDP. The chair of the meeting introduced the activities of IDP during the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced its cosponsoring IDP. The European Union, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, Colombia and other members shared their experiences and practices in dealing with plastic pollution and expressed their interest in advancing IDP in the WTO.
