The WTO Hosts the Fifth South-South Dialogue

Sponsored by the China's LDCs and Accessions Programme and organized by the WTO secretariat, the 5th "South-South Dialogue on Least Developed Countries and Development" was held on 16th May in Geneva. WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Deputy Director-General Zhang Xiangchen delivered remarks at the opening and closing session respectively. Close to 100 participants, including about 30 ambassadors from LDCs had intensive and inspiring dialogues with the WTO negotiating body chairs and ambassadors from partner countries on four selected topics: current priorities in negotiations, WTO reform, graduation of least developed countries and the future of multilateral trading system.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Li Chenggang said, for developing members and LDCs, the long overdue “rule deficit”, or explicitly “development deficit” in reality, has been our longtime concern. China remains confident that through our collective efforts, the WTO can make its rules more balanced to meet its liability of development through future reform. China is ready to work with other members to blaze a trail of reform, with patience, beliefs and actions.
