China and the WTO co-host high-level forum commemorating the 20th anniversary of China's WTO accession

On December 10th, the Permanent Mission of China to the WTO and the WTO Secretariat co-organized a High-Level Forum entitled "20 Years of China's WTO Membership: Integration & Development". Ambassador Li Chenggang and Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala attended the opening ceremony and delivered the statements. Moderated by Deputy Director General Zhang Xiangchen, three esteemed guests, former Director General of the WTO Mr. Pascal Lamy, former deputy United States trade representative Ms. Wendy Cutler, former vice minister of commerce of China and chief negotiator for China's accession Mr. Long Yongtu, participated the panel discussion.

In his statement, Ambassador Li Chenggang said, China’s continued opening up and reform after its accession not only fundamentally promoted China’s development, but also greatly benefited global economy and people all over the world. In recent years, the WTO has been facing both global challenges and internal challenges. China will continue to staunchly support the multilateral trading system. China hopes the WTO could deliver meaningful outcomes in some critical areas, such as fisheries subsidies and response to Covid-19 pandemic. To revitalize the WTO key functions, China supports the WTO to have necessary reform and is ready to work together with other members while preserving the WTO’s core values and basic principles.
